Character Information
Name: Mollymauk Tealeaf
Series: Critical Role: Campaign 2
Appearance: 1 | 2 (Official Art)
Age: Physically and mentally adult (somewhere around 20-25), chronologically 2 as Molly.
Canon Point: Episode 26, just after dying.
Canon History: Here
Personality: Mollymauk Tealeaf is an experience. Loud, colorful, confident and a literal and figurative peacock, he enjoys baffling people with his ostentatious looks and almost flamboyant personality. Not only because he always likes to put on a show, but because he uses it to gauge how people react to him. (He’s basically making snap judgments on people based on what he interprets as their snap judgments of him.) Molly believes you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat you, and if someone is being an ass to him, then he sees it as permission to be a dick right back. However, takes a lot to get him actually angry. Life's too short for grudges, and while he can be stern and stubborn when he's made up his mind, but mostly just lets things go - especially if it's just someone trying to provoke reactions from him.
Since he's a tiefling, a race few people trust, he's often met with suspicion in the first place - and unlike many other tieflings, he's not going to hide what he is at all, decorating his horns and flashing fanged smiles to make people even more uncomfortable. He's also very comfortable with his own body and identity (he mostly uses he/him but doesn't really give a shit about gender) and has no sense of personal space or boundaries. He often gets in the faces of the people he's around, touching, leaning against, giving quick pecks and affection both to people he genuinely likes and to push others off-balance and make them - again - uncomfortable so they show their true selves.
Technically 'raised' by a circus, it's no surprise he is a showman, creating his own personality from the empty person he was when crawling out of his own grave. Two years is not a lot of time to become a person, but as he says, 'joy can fill a lot of a person's life'. Plus what he doesn't know or understand, he bullshits instead - because Molly is a liar.
'The first thing out of your mouth should never be the truth' is his philosophy, because lies are a lot more fun than the truth, and his life is mostly a mess of lies to hide that he's missing a past. He believes people don't want to hear the truth. It only upsets them, and stories and bullshit is also a lot more entertaining. He very much prefers spectacle and tall tales to reality, because that makes people happy - and Molly is all about making people happy and leaving places and people better than they were before. He might be an asshole and not quite a good person, but he's a kind person.
Being so 'young', there's a lot of things in life he has not experienced, and he's always hungry for new things. He is constantly delighted by the world, he finds life delightful, he finds everything delightful. Any thrill or high or otherwise, he is the first on board. Molly’s very much a when-in-doubt-say-yes person, so the opportunity to go along with the others rather than staying with the remains of his old life was hard to resist. He believes it’s better to be moving at high speed toward a wall than not moving at all, even if it ends up a mess. Drugs, alcohol, sex and hedonism are favorite things of his, and with the Mighty Nein he has money than he's ever seen in his time with the circus - so of course he spends that on lavish bath houses, pretty but useless things and even paid company at a fancy inn.
He has less patience for 'boring' things and never really learned how to read properly, making him functionally illiterate. He can read, just not very well - and not at all complicated things. Of course this does not make him stupid, but he's definitely more of a street-smart person that an academic.
Despite the bullshit and the showmanship, Molly also has a serious code that he lives by. He believes there’s a fairness to the universe and you should abide by it, and if it isn’t fair then you should correct it. You don’t steal from those who can’t afford it, you use the money for what you steal it for, and believes that the purpose of money is to make other people happy. He never takes more than what he feels he's earned, never steals from the people he's traveling with (and expects the others not to, either), and always keeps a promise. He seems to see some of the best in people, and encourages them, sometimes forcefully, to do better.
This moral code clashes a bit with the way he uses his innate powers to charm people, but that’s really easy to do if you are the center of your moral reality. He believes he’s smart enough not to do anything wrong, which is a mix of pride and inexperience, and also makes him seem quite arrogant at times. It all works until it doesn’t. (He’s also technically a worshiper of a god of lies, which might give him some 'moral' leeway.) Whenever he does use spells like that, it tends to be punitive or whatever he considers to be helpful for that person. It’s definitely not something a normal, healthy person should do, but he's never said that he is.
In fact, there's a bit of codependency in Molly, because he's never been alone more than the time between crawling out of his own grave and being picked up by the circus, and he would not be able to function on his own. That is why he's a very loyal person and fiercely protective of 'his' people, be it the circus or his new companions in the Mighty Nein. He died to protect the friend he argues with the most and has no regrets dying knowing she was safe because of him - which is telling of how much you do not fuck with his people.
Despite being a liar, he's very adamant about the fact that he's not a betrayer, and when people ask why anyone should trust him since he lies and bullshits, his response is "because I always lie and bullshit." When he's giving advice to people outside the group, it’s usually bogus, but inside the group, he’s probably speaking from genuine experience in his two years with the circus. He does have a baseline of information in his head, but it’s just not all necessarily useful information. He's also extremely good at reading people, something that helped him create himself and now also works to his advantage when he does 'fortune-telling' bullshit with his tarot deck.
This 'baseline' of information is also very much instincts, which makes him a very decent fighter on muscle memory and that alone. He also has little, small glimpses of knowledge from his past about his powers, which is why he sometimes learn new things and freak out a bit about it afterwards. He combats any 'links' to this past self by making it his own. Molly hid all the red 'eyes' on his body that he woke up with with other tattoos, and uses gaudy, ridiculous and even useless carnival weapons to fight with. Anything to distance himself from this other person.
That is also a strong part of Molly's personality, the fact that he lives heavily in the now, believing people's past mean nothing compared to who they are now. This obviously comes from his own unknown past - he doesn't care who had his body before him, he doesn’t care who 'Lucien' was. It doesn’t matter if he was a good person or a bad person. It's his body now. He's made it of nothing but the decisions that led him to be Mollymauk Tealeaf, and he believes you get to decide who you are, and he’s very much decided who he is.
The thought of not being himself and being forced back into his past or knowing more about this other person freaks him out, and is probably his biggest fear. He knows he lives on borrowed time and that his past might one day catch up with him, so he's desperately running away from that.
Abilities:
Tiefling Abilities
Darkvision
• Tieflings can see in dim light as if it was normal light, and in darkness as if it was dim light (but in grayscale).
Hellish Resistance
• Molly is resistant to fire, and only takes half damage from it.
Devil's Tongue
Molly is a variant tiefling, probably with an unusual infernal ancestor. Thus he has some mind-controlling abilities unlike the more common fire ones.
Vicious Mockery
• He can harm an enemy just with his voice. Although this is usually done with mocking an opponent, Mollymauk likes using intimidation instead, by speaking Infernal - the demonic language. What he says is usually nonsense, though.
Charm Person
• With honeyed words, Molly can bend the mind of another person (they can try to resist it), making them a trusted friend for an hour. Afterwards they will know he used magic on them.
Enthrall
• Using his mind-altering magic, he is able to ensnare a target so they are frozen and can only focus on him. Nobody else exists for the enthralled target until the spell ends after a minute or they break free.
Character Feats
Tough
• Molly's pretty sturdy and can take a bit more damage than some.
Blood Hunter Abilities
As a Blood Hunter, he has survived the imbibing of the Hunter’s Bane, a poisonous alchemical concoction that alters your life’s blood, forever binding you to the darkness and honing your senses against it. Of course he doesn't actually remember this, and keeps finding new strange powers in himself.
Hunter's Bane
• Molly can track fey, fiends, and undead, as well a recall information about them (only D&D versions, if needed to be nerfed). If he's actively tracking one of these creature types, he can also feel their presence. However, he can only be tracking one type of creature at a time.
Blood Maledict
Blood Curse of the Eyeless
• Molly has the ability to curse an enemy with some nasty blindness for a while.
Blood Curse of Purgation
• He can manipulate the vitality of a creature to expunge a corruption in their blood, like poison.
Both these abilities harm him by automatically popping a vessel in one of the eye tattoos on his body, and making him bleed. If he amplifies the curse effect, he takes more damage.
Crimson Rite
Primal Rite: Rite of the Frozen
• Drawing his own blood, Molly activates a rite on his blades or any sharp object to enchant them with magic. This rite enchants his scimitars or any sharp object with frost magic, and does frost damage.
Esoteric Rite: Rite of the Dawn
• As a Ghoststayer Blood Hunter, Molly can activate radiant magic on his scimitars or any sharp object. This holy magic does extra damage to undead. This is also activated by drawing his own blood.
Inventory:
• An amulet known as the Periapt of Wound Closure, which heals him a small bit when he's knocked unconscious so he doesn't die.
• A shitton of gaudy jewelry and decorations, worn in his horns, ears and on his fingers.
• The wettest pouch, bedazzled with gems, containing absolutely ruined incense.
• Fortune-telling cards, a deck of marked cards that he uses for his impressive bullshit. Wet, but salvageable since I imagine they've been wet before.
• A kit of makeup and other things to disguise himself. Completely ruined. Thanks, ocean.
• Glass carnival scimitars - fairly useless entertainment weapons, but works great once activated with his magic.
• Another scimitar known as Summer's Dance, which is less useless. Gives the ability to Misty Step, which is a short-range teleportation spell.

Q&A:
What’s more important: the way others see you, or the way you see yourself?
The way I see myself, of course! Why does it matter what other people think?
Would you say that, overall, you are a decent person?
I'm never decent! Aside from that, I try to be a good person. It doesn't always work, but then I hope for at least a kind person.
What qualities do you look for in a friend?
Someone who backs me up, or at least lets me get away with my bullshit. Someone fun.
Who is the most important person (or persons) in your life, and why?
Yasha. Because she's Yasha. She doesn't come with a 'why', she just is.
If you could change something about a person you love, would you do it? Why or why not?
Why the fuck would I do this? If I care about someone it includes any weaknesses or problems they have. If there's an issue we'll talk about it.
Do you have any spiritual or religious beliefs? If so, what are they?
I'm partial to some gods, I guess? Not anything special, I'm not overly religious.
What is your greatest weakness?
...you didn't really think I'd answer this one, did you? I'm not that dumb.
